Beginning the design process

Whilst down on the beach on Westray one early morning last week, the low angle of the sun cast a variety of sand patterns into relief. Some of these have been circulating in my mind, and I’ve been mulling over how I might weave them.

Besides all this thinking, I’ve begun the process with some simple sketches of the ones that seem to have made the most impression on me. I’ve been aiming to capture the core lines, as these will guide me in shaping the composition of a piece. Also they’ll help to develop my thinking about choice of yarn, size, warp set etc.

I’ve now got these – and other sketches – propped up around my studio space so that my thinking process can carry on.
